SUMMARY:Mathematics Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:"Operator Theory and the K-homology of Algebraic Varieties," W
illiam Arveson is professor of Mathematics at the University of Californi
a, Berkeley. He has held numerous visiting positions and fellowships incl
uding Newcastle (UK), Aarhus, Rio de Janeiro, Oslo, UC San Diego, Nankai,
Canberra, Penn, Trondheim, Kyoto, two years (1985-86 and 1999-00) as Mil
ler research professor at Berkeley. His theory of extensions of completel
y positive maps now permeates the study of operator algebras. A current i
nterest is the study of endomorphisms of operator algebras (E0-semigroups
), which models non-commutative dynamics arising in quantum theory.

SUMMARY:Hairspray
DESCRIPTION:Broadway's Tony Award-winning musical-comedy phenomenon takes
you back to 1962 Baltimore, as 16-year-old Tracy Turnblad sets out to dan
ce her way onto TV's most popular show. Can a big girl with big dreams-
and even bigger hair- change the world... and still have time to win the
boy she loves?\nThis mega-hit is piled bouffant-high with laughter and ro
mance- and enough deliriously tuneful new songs to fill a nonstop platter
-party. It's the winner of eight 2003 Tony Awards, including Best Musica
 l. The New York Times says, "If life were everything it should be, it wo
uld be more like Hairspray. It's irresistible!"
