"Evapotranspiration, Surface Water, and Ground Water Influences at a Nebraska Sand Hills Wetland Mitigation Site" Wyatt Webster; Advisor Kyle Hoagland The development of a water budget for a wetland mitigation site to address performance standards outlined by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACoE) is essential in determining site viability in maintaining wetland functions replaced due to Section 404 procedures of The Clean Water Act. The history of wetland mitigation sites in the Sand Hills region of north-central Nebraska is poorly-defined and often non-existent. Although several wetland complexes in interdunal valleys are well studied (e.g., Burba et al. 1999; Gosselin et al. 2006; Harvey et al. 2007), studies focusing on the enhancement or restoration of wetland mitigation sites in the Sand Hills are lacking, yet essential in preserving regional aquatic resources. A year-long field study was conducted on a semi-arid wetland mitigation site in the Sand Hills. The principal objective of this study was to develop a more complete water budget necessary to meet USACoE regulatory performance standard specifications. Utilizing on-site meteorological instrumentation and the Bowen-ratio energy budget approach, surface energy balance ET measurements were correlated with the influence of the highly variable water table depth and on-site surface water retention and flow. Groundwater and surface water fluxes were assessed via observation wells and a flume. A secondary objective was to make use of these estimates to meet credit certification requirements, to allow its use as a wetland mitigation bank site for future Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR) projects. Thus, this study will benefit NDOR in providing a monitoring protocol, as well as the potential acquisition and restoration of additional wetland mitigation sites in the Nebraska Sand Hills.
1:30 pm-3:30 pmFlu Shot Clinic UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTER
The UHC will be holding flu shot clinics for UNL students, faculty, and staff. Flu vaccinations cost $20 and payment by cash or check is required at the time of the vaccination. For those with Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, a claim will be filied for them by UHC staff for possible reimbursement (please bring your insurance information with you to the clinic), however you will still need to pay at time of shot. Flu vaccinations are also available by appointment at UHC for those unable to attend a clinic.
1:30 pm-4:00 pmStatewide Satellite Workshop - Control Diabetes for Life UNL Extension Offices across the state
Statewide satellite workshop at host sites. Contact your local UNL Extension Office for details.
3:00 pm-4:00 pmSchool of Natural Resources Seminar (Student) HARDIN HALL
"Potential Impacts of Human Physical Disturbance on Benthic Communities in Tributaries of the Niobrara National Scenic River" Kim Lang, MS Student, University of Nebraska-Lincoln; Advisor Kyle Hoagland. The Niobrara National Scenic River is a 76-mile segment with over 200 waterfalls in the western stretch of the river. Visitors are attracted to the Niobrara River to enjoy the waterfalls, canoeing, kayaking, tubing, swimming, and fishing. This study investigated the impacts of visitors, walking in the streams to visit the waterfalls, on the benthic community. Disturbances can result in a variety of changes such as increased turbidity, increased drift among aquatic invertebrates, and the elimination of sensitive species. Ten tributaries, located along the south bank of the Niobrara River were sampled monthly from May through September. The tributaries were divided into five streams that were potentially impacted from visitors, located upstream, and five streams that were known to have no visitors. A mini-surber sampler was used to collect benthic invertebrates from upstream sections of the tributary (above the waterfalls with no visitors) and from downstream, below the waterfall. Current velocity, depth, width, and distance from the edge of the tributary were recorded at each location. Water temperature, pH and conductivity were measured and a water sample taken to measure total nitrogen, total phosphorus and turbidity. In June, July and August visitor information was collected by volunteers at each potentially impacted tributary. Volunteers counted the number of times each tributary was disturbed. These data, along with daily visitor use collected by Fort Niobrara, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will be used to estimate the degree of disturbance at each location and its impact on benthic species composition and abundance.
4:00 pm-5:00 pmBiotechnology/Life Sciences Fall 2007 Seminar BEADLE CENTER
“A unifying concept of virus origin and evolution derived from comparative genomics,” will be presented by Dr. Valerian Dolja, Oregon State University. A reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.
7:30 pmStudent Composers, "Wet Ink" KIMBALL RECITAL HALL
Tickets: General admission $5, students and seniors $3 and will be available at the door approx. one hour before the performance.
7:30 pmSIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION TEMPLE BUILDING
The play follows the connections made by a young con man, Paul, who insinuates himself into New York society, particularly the lives of the wealthy couple Ouisa and Flan Kittredge. Claiming to know their son from college, that he is the son of actor Sidney Poitier, and that he has just been mugged, they invite Paul to stay overnight. Fascinated by his intelligence, the Kittredge’s are rudely awakened by the Paul they find in their home in the morning. Adult Content/Male Nudity
