7:30 pmOpera: Così fan Tutte
Given enough temptation, would all women cheat? That's the question asked in Mozart's great comic opera. The answer? Così fan tutte-All women are like that. And why are women like that? Because men are like that, too! In 12 miraculously sunny arias balanced by 18 ensembles of heart-melting beauty, Mozart explores a world of love, trust, and manipulation. The story is silly and serious: Two young men, boastfully confident of how faithful their fiancées are, accept a wager to test the women's fidelity: each will disguise himself-as Albanians!-and try to seduce the other man's lover. At first, the women show the resistance expected of them, and it's all very amusing. But subtly and gradually, things begin to change. Whoever wins the wager, can the lives of these lovers ever be the same again? Tickets: General admission $20, students and seniors $10 and will be available through the Lied Center box office at 402/472-4747 or 800-432-3231.
7:30 pmSt. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra LIED CENTER for PERFORMING ARTS
The oldest symphonic ensemble in the former Soviet Union, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic began when a group of Russian aristocrats founded Europe's first Philharmonic Society in 1802. In 1917, during the Bolshevik Revolution, it was changed by decree to a state orchestra, becoming the first major musical organization in the USSR and, following World War II, the first Soviet orchestra to tour abroad. With Yuri Temirkanov as music director and principal conductor since 1988, the orchestra has completed major international tours and recordings and achieved an unparalled reputation. At the Lied Center, the orchestra will perform Mozart's "Overture to The Marriage of Figaro," Beethoven's "Concerto for Violin," and Prokofiev's "Symphony No. 5."
