A productive, collaborative relationship between the postdoc and supervisor must include communicating clear expectations and defining roles. This session addresses the effectiveness of using such nationally recognized tools as the Individual Development Plan (IDP) and the AAMC Compact to establish a mutually beneficial working relationship. Dr. Penning's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion--involving UNL faculty and administrators--and Q/A.
12:00 pm-2:00 pmFlu Shot Clinic UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTER
The UHC will be holding flu shot clinics (no appointments necessary) for UNL students, faculty, and staff. Flu vaccinations cost $20 and payment by cash or check is required at the time of the vaccination. For those with Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance, a claim will be filed for them by UHC staff for possible reimbursement (please bring your insurance information with you to the clinic), however you will still need to pay at time of shot. Flu vaccinations are also available by appointment at UHC for those unable to attend a clinic.

After addressing national trends in postdoctoral training, including funding agencies' emphasis on the importance of mentorship, Dr. Penning will provide an overview of the changing demographics of the scientific work force, the career trajectories in light of these demographics, and the value of thinking broadly about careers after the postdoctoral experience.

Alan C. Kamil, the George Holmes University Professor of biological sciences and psychology, will discuss how birds use their cognitive abilities to survive. The lecture is free, open to the public, and a reception follows.

The English Department's Interdisciplinary Conversations in Place Study Group presents John Price, author of the memoir Man Killed by Pheasant, in a reading and discussion on memoir, identity, and place. Co-sponsored by the English Department, the Center for Great Plains Studies, and the Plains Humanities Alliance.
5:00 pm-6:00 pmNative Voices Program in connection with Lewis & Clark and the Indian Country traveling exhibit LOVE LIBRARY SOUTH
Presentation by W. Otis Halfmoon, Love Library Room 110. W. Otis Halfmoon, (Nez Perce), National Park Service, worked as a consultant on the Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country exhibit and is a descendant of Heyuum Pahkit Timna (Grizzly Bear with Five Hearts), a Nez Perce Chief who met the Corps of Discovery on their return journey. He describes Nez Perce life before Lewis and Clark, and the untold stories and the impact of this small part of tribal history. He will discuss the present condition of the tribe and touch upon issues that pertain to the protection of natural and cultural resources.
