SUMMARY:Opera: A Midsummer Night's Dream
DESCRIPTION:UNL Opera presents Benjamin Britten’s wonderful interpretati
on of the Shakespeare classic, \nA Midsummer Night’s Dream.\n\nAudience
s will delight at this contemporary yet accessible, tuneful adaptation of
Shakespeare’s classic fantasy, replete with enchanted woods, fairies,
a wedding party, and a rustic weaver who’s turned into a donkey! Unlik
e so many of Britten’s contemporaries, his music is tonal and widely ap
proachable to the general musical audience. Celebrated music critic Terr
y Teachout put it this way, “For those Mozart-loving opera buffs who lo
ng ago wrote off ‘contemporary opera’ as a lumpy, inedible stew of hi
gh-voltage dissonance and hair-tearing angst, the lucidity and charm of A
Midsummer Night’s Dream are likely to come as an agreeable shock.”
Don’t miss this stellar, all-student production under the direction of
Dr. William Shomos, UNL Director of Opera. Dr. Tyler Goodrich White will
conduct the UNL Philharmonia. \nYou are sure to be enchanted!\nTickets:
Adults $20, student/senior $10. Available thru the Lied Center box offic
 e, 402/472-4747 or 1-800/432-3231.

SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:“Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” tells the story o
f the explorers’ historic 1804–1806 expedition from a different point
of view—that of the Indians who lived along their route. During their
journey to the Pacific coast and back, Meriwether Lewis and William Clar
k and their small group of voyagers crossed the traditional homelands of
more than 50 Native American tribes. The exhibit examines this monumenta
l encounter of cultures and examines the past and present effects of that
encounter on the lives of the tribes which still live in the region. \n\
n“Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” is composed of six sections
of panels of images and text drawn from original documents in the rich N
ative American collections of the Newberry Library, and in the collection
s of the Washington State Historical Society, the Minnesota Historical So
 ciety and other institutions.
