SUMMARY:Election 2008
DESCRIPTION:The College of Journalism and Mass Communications is planning
an extensive night of converged election coverage. More than 70 students
in radio, television, online and print journalism have been gearing up to
cover Election 2008. The student participation in election coverage is t
he capstone in a semester of election-focused events. Coverage begins Nov
 . 4 at 8 p.m. and will continue until about midnight. \n“It’s a big u
ndertaking,” said Trina Creighton, a broadcasting professor who is coor
dinating the students’ election coverage. Creighton expects the night t
o be exciting and hectic, but has complete confidence in the students’
ability to handle the pressure. \nStudents will produce and host a live n
ewscast on Channel 21 with reports streaming to NewsNetNebraska, the coll
ege’s student-produced multimedia news service, and 90.3 KRNU. Students
will do live newsroom shots from campaign headquarters, conduct exit pol
l interviews during voting hours and photojournalists will be sending in
photos from across Lincoln that evening.\nIn preparation for Election Day
, Creighton said, students have researched and investigated the issues. S
tories, in pre-production now, that will air on election night include pr
ofiles of senatorial and presidential candidates; look at the state’s l
egislative and congressional races, examine the GOP in small-town Nebrask
a; look at the college vote; discuss the affirmative action amendment on
the Nebraska ballot, look at the history of exit polls, and assess the bl
ogging and You Tube phenonema during this election cycle.\nThe live newsc
ast will include interviews of local political experts. The election expe
rts are:\n• Dr. John R. Hibbing, political scientist and UNL professor
, is an expert on the biological causes of political behavior;\n•	Dr. J
ohn Bender, news-editorial professor will discuss the Bush legacy;\n•	D
 r. Charlyne Berens, news-editorial professor and author of a biography on
Sen. Chuck Hagel will assess his legacy;\n•	Dr. Dona-Gean Mitchell, UN
 L political scientist;\n•	Jessica Kolterman, Nebraska Farm Bureau’s f
irst political director, and vice president/governmental relations, will
talk about how ads are developed;\n•	Professor Sue Burzynski-Bullard, n
ews-editorial professor, will discuss the influence of blogging on the el
ection;\n•	Michael Wagner, UNL political science professor and J school
alum, will discuss issue framing, campaign ads and election coverage.\nF
ollowing the election, the college will host two post-election events.\n
On Nov. 5 at 9 a.m., the college will host an international town hall
meeting with the Kosovo Institute of Journalism and Communication in Pris
tina, Kosovo, and the Gimlekollen School of Journalism and Communication
in Kristiansand, Norway. Journalism students will have an open exchange w
ith graduate journalism students to discuss and interpret the election re
sults.\n— On Nov. 5 at 8 p.m., Jim Crounse, a political advertising con
sultant who works with the Obama campaign, will share his analysis of the
election in a forum called “Election 2008: Why Did That Happen,” in
Anderson Hall 15. During Crounse’s 26-year political career on Capitol
Hill, he has helped elect many key figures in the Democratic Party. The e
vent is open to the public.\nOther election-related events at the college
this semester included:\n•	Daily Nebraskan editor Brian Hernandez blog
ged about the first presidential debate in real time. The New York Times
enlisted student newspaper editors from around the country to weigh in on
politics. To read his blog visit http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008
/09/26/debate-watch-student-view. \n•	The college hosted two Egyptian p
olitical bloggers in late September as part of an American University of
Cairo-USAID project that sent bloggers to Nebraska and other U.S. journal
ism schools to help them better understand the U.S. election and write ab
out to fellow Egyptians. The bloggers spoke to various journalism classes
, met with representatives from the Nebraska’s Republican and Democrati
c parties and attended student events on campus related to the election.
The bloggers will return Oct. 30 to make observations during the week of
the election. The college’s Student Advisory Board helped to organize t
he events for the bloggers during their weeklong stay in October.\n•	Th
e college was host to a traveling news photo exhibit from the Associated
Press in August and September. Called “The American President,” the i
mages depicted memorable moments throughout the history of the American p
 residency.

SUMMARY:Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country
DESCRIPTION:“Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” tells the story o
f the explorers’ historic 1804–1806 expedition from a different point
of view—that of the Indians who lived along their route. During their
journey to the Pacific coast and back, Meriwether Lewis and William Clar
k and their small group of voyagers crossed the traditional homelands of
more than 50 Native American tribes. The exhibit examines this monumenta
l encounter of cultures and examines the past and present effects of that
encounter on the lives of the tribes which still live in the region. \n\
n“Lewis and Clark and the Indian Country” is composed of six sections
of panels of images and text drawn from original documents in the rich N
ative American collections of the Newberry Library, and in the collection
s of the Washington State Historical Society, the Minnesota Historical So
 ciety and other institutions.
