The 2008 Nebraska Soybean Day and Machinery Expo Dec. 12 will assist soybean producers in planning for next year's growing season. Topics will address production to storage to marketing.

The expo, which begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 2:30 p.m., will be in the pavilion at the Saunders County Fairgrounds in Wahoo, said Keith Glewen, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension educator. The expo opens with coffee, doughnuts and the opportunity to view equipment and exhibitor booths. Speakers start at 9 a.m.

Presenters will include UNL researchers and specialists, Nebraska Soybean Board representatives, soybean growers and private industry representatives.

“Grain Marketing is Simple” will be presented by Ed Usset. Usset is a Grain Marketing Specialist at the University of Minnesota and is part of the team that developed the award winning “Winning the Game” series of workshops. He currently teaches a course on “Futures and Options Markets” at the University. His first book, “Grain Marketing is Simple (it’s just not easy)” was released in September 2007.

Producers will be able to visit with representatives from seed, herbicide, fertilizer and equipment companies and view new farm equipment during a 30-minute break at 10 a.m.

Dr Stewart’s, Associate Professor of Sociology, Iowa State University, area of expertise is family demography, the statistical study of families and households in terms of their formation, dissolution, and change over time. Her research uses large national datasets to examine structural diversity, parent-child relationships, fertility, parental involvement, and child and adult well-being in nontraditional family forms. With funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, the Joint Center for Poverty Research, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dr. Stewart is investigating race and gender differences in nonresident parental involvement (child support and visitation) and its relationship to children’s well-being, the relationship between food insecurity, family stress, and childhood obesity, eating patterns and obesity among children in nontraditional families, and new stepfamily forms and patterns such as stepchild adoption. Dr. Stewart recently completed her first book, Brave New Stepfamilies: Diverse Paths toward Stepfamily Living (Sage, 2007).

As his elfin alter ego, "Crumpet," he alternates between introspective ramblings, to over-the-top outbursts, to biting mean-spirited descriptions, with maybe just a crumb of holiday spirit thrown in. Not suitable for younger than 13.
