SUMMARY:Talk by Susan Stewart
DESCRIPTION:Dr Stewart’s, Associate Professor of Sociology, Iowa State U
niversity, area of expertise is family demography, the statistical study
of families and households in terms of their formation, dissolution, and
change over time. Her research uses large national datasets to examine st
ructural diversity, parent-child relationships, fertility, parental invol
vement, and child and adult well-being in nontraditional family forms. Wi
th funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Developm
ent, the Joint Center for Poverty Research, and the U.S. Department of Ag
riculture, Dr. Stewart is investigating race and gender differences in no
nresident parental involvement (child support and visitation) and its rel
ationship to children’s well-being, the relationship between food insec
urity, family stress, and childhood obesity, eating patterns and obesity
among children in nontraditional families, and new stepfamily forms and p
atterns such as stepchild adoption. Dr. Stewart recently completed her fi
rst book, Brave New Stepfamilies: Diverse Paths toward Stepfamily Living
 (Sage, 2007).

SUMMARY:THE SANTALAND DIARIES
DESCRIPTION:The plot is built around the musings of a single character, pl
ayed by Paul Steger, who begins the play by scoffing at a classified ad f
or seasonal employment as a Santaland Elf at Macy's. As his elfin alter
ego, "Crumpet," he alternates between introspective ramblings, to over-th
e-top outbursts, to biting mean-spirited descriptions, with maybe just a
crumb of holiday spirit thrown in. Not suitable for younger than 13.
