SUMMARY:Evidence of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Global warming, one of the defining issues of our day, is the
focus of the University Libraries 2008 Visiting Scholar Program during a
two-day event on April 16 and 17. Dr. David Easterling, an internationall
y recognized expert on climate change, will participate in two events des
igned to shed light on this complex and divisive topic. \nEasterling, a
researcher Center and Chief of Scientific Services at the National Climat
ic Data Center, was a Lead Author for Climate Change 2007, the Fourth Ass
essment Report (AR4) of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Cli
mate Change (IPCC), which shared with Al Gore the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel won the Prize "for their eff
orts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate
change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to c
ounteract such change." \nDr. Easterling will present a lecture on "Evide
nce of Climate Change," Wednesday, April 16 at 2:00 PM in the City Campus
Union. \nDr Easterling will also participate in a panel discussion of "C
limate Change and the Great Plains" on Thursday, April 17 at 2:00 PM in t
he City Campus Union. Joining him on the panel will be three UNL climate
experts: Dr. Sheri Fritz, Willa Cather Professor of Geosciences and Biolo
gical Sciences; Dr. Michael Hayes, Director of the National Drought Mitig
ation Center; and Dr. Kenneth Hubbard, Director of the High Plains Region
al Climate Center with panel moderator Bob Bolin of the University Librar
ies. A reception will follow.\nThese events are free and open to the publ
ic. They are sponsored by the University Libraries, Department of Geoscie
nces, the High Plains Regional Climate Center, the National Drought Mitig
ation and the Convocations Committee.\nFor more information visit: http:/

SUMMARY:UHON 395 Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Suddenly, it’s bioenergy - ethanol and biodiesel. Bioenergy
to solve the climate change problem caused by greenhouse gases. Bioenergy
to inject vitality into declining rural communities. Bioenergy to free u
s from international oil villains. But wait… Bioenergy will drive food
prices up and starve the poor by appropriating the food supply for energy
. Bioenergy will ruin our livestock sector. Bioenergy will deforest the t
ropics and desertify the plains. Bioenergy will benefit farm landowners,
but no one else. And bioenergy will happen only with billions of dollars
of subsidies - can we afford it? In this course, students will evaluate t
he prospects for biofuels in the context of climate change and the world
energy market. Participants will first review climate change assessments
and the relationship of climate change to world energy markets, and will
then examine the potential role of biofuels in reducing carbon emissions.
Issues to be addressed include the potential effects of biofuels on food
security and on natural resource sustainability, and a comparison of bio
fuel subsidies versus carbon taxes in mitigating climate change. Particip
ants will be expected to research and report on scientific studies, and t
o learn and utilize various approaches to cost-benefit evaluation of publ
ic policies. Our goal is not to resolve the difficult questions raised ab
ove, but help students to sharpen their ability to analyze them and perha
ps to more effectively advocate world-saving choices.
