Of all the words that could be used to describe Dr. Robert L. Dickinson (1861-1950) — gynecologist, sex researcher, birth control pioneer, gifted sculptor and illustrator — “famous” is certainly not one of them. Yet his lack of popular recognition is striking because not only did he serve as inspiration for such prominent sexologists as Kinsey and Masters and Johnson, but he helped lay the foundations for modern day gynecology and sex research. With images from two of his most influential volumes (The Control of Fertility and The Human Sex Atlas), historians Holz and Rodriguez examine the work and legacy of this complex and controversial man whose life work influenced the lives of women for generations to follow.
