9:00 am-5:00 pmUNL Extension Program - (CMDC) Field Crop Scout Training Agricultural Research & Development Center, near Mead

A University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension crop scout training course will provide crop scouts an opportunity to enhance their skills.

The training is designed for entry level scouts who will be working for crop consultants, industry agronomists or farm service centers across Nebraska and neighboring states, said Keith Glewen, UNL Extension educator.

The course is from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with registration at 8:30 a.m. May 12 at the university's Agricultural Research and Development Center near Mead, Neb.

"Past participants have given the training high marks and state that the knowledge gained from attending greatly enhanced their scouting skills," Glewen said.

Topics include: how corn and soybean plants grow and develop; soybean and corn pests; insect quiz; plant morphology; using a key to identify weed seedlings; identifying weeds; crop diseases and quiz; and nutrient deficiencies.

Presenters include: Dale Flowerday, agronomist; Tamra Jackson, UNL Extension plant pathologist ; Keith Jarvi, UNL Extension entomologist ; Keith Glewen, UNL Extension educator; Lowell Sandell, UNL Extension weed science educator; and Amy Ziems, UNL Extension educator - plant pathology.

Some of the benefits registrants stated the training provided included practical/working knowledge and better accuracy in field scouting, Glewen said. "Other participants appreciated the hands-on, practical format."

Early registration is $95 by May 5 and $105 after.

A total of 5.5 Certified Crop Advisor Continuing Education Units is anticipated in the integrated pest management (4.0), crop production (1.0) and soil fertility (.5) categories.

The training is part of the UNL Extension Crop Management Diagnostic Clinics and is sponsored by Extension in the university's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Additional diagnostic clinics include: Mid-Summer Diagnostic Clinic - July 22; Mid-Summer Diagnostic Clinic - July 23; and Late Season Diagnostic Clinic - August 20.

The Southeast Nebraska Inventors, Investors and Entrepreneurs Club (I2E Club), will meet Tuesday, May 12 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Kimmel Education & Research Center in Nebraska City. The meeting will begin with a networking social at 5:30 PM featuring food from an I2E member, Hickory Road BBQ and Catering Company in located in Auburn, Nebraska. The networking social, sponsored by UNL Kimmel Education and Research Center, will also include other Nebraska products. Mr. Mark Patterson, Vice- President of 5Stat (one of four divisions under Store Kraft Manufacturing of Beatrice, Nebraska), will speak following the networking social. Mr. Patterson will share his entrepreneurial insights during his presentation, “ You May Be Using RFID ” (Radio Frequency Identification) Now. Mark started as a consultant for Store Kraft and soon became a member of management in July, 2004. He has over 20 years of experience in the woodworking industry with a strong background in manufacturing operations. Mark has proven accomplishments in improving profitability and manufacturing operation efficiencies and most recently in effectively building the 5stat subsidiary corporation with top talent and global market position. Immediately following, Bill Hawkins (aka “Farmer Bill”), a wild crafter and entrepreneur will present information about the effectiveness of using images and technology to market businesses. Each business has a unique story to tell, and Farmer Bill will present information on how he markets his enterprise. Farmer Bill will also provide some inspiration and motivation for the evening. This small group setting stimulates open and supportive networking amongst individuals while encouraging and inspiring creative thinking. Anyone interested in exploring the idea of developing a product, starting their own business or expanding on current business skills, is invited to attend. The Club is a collaborative effort by a regional group in Southeast Nebraska and has been made possible by funding from a Building Entrepreneurial Communities Act (BECA) grant. There is a $10 per session fee or participants may choose to join the club and pay a small annual membership fee. Dr. Connie Reimers-Hild is the I2E program coordinator and facilitator.
