12:00 pm-1:00 pmFree lunch time Chinese workshop for UNL students, faculty and staff NEBRASKA UNION
Do you know that at UNL there are more than a thousand students/scholars coming from China? Have you ever felt challenged with pronouncing their names or trying to interact with them due to language and cultural barriers? Would it be helpful if you can learn some most practical Chinese phrases/sentences in just two days to make your communications with Chinese a little easier?

This two day, one-hour workshop is just there for you. It is designed to show you the etiquette interacting with Chinese people, and 20 common Chinese phrases/sentences used in greeting, introducing yourself, expressing thanks and apologies, and saying goodbye to your Chinese colleagues or students.

This workshop will be taught by Associate Professor Pingan Huang, the Associate Director of the Confucius Institute at UNL. The workshop is scheduled on Oct. 24 and 26, both between noon and 1 p.m. in Colonial Room at the City Campus Nebraska Union. Space is limited to 50 seats and is on a first come, first serve basis.

Join us once a month for conversation about ethics in context. You bring your experience, expertise and interest in ethics; we'll bring your lunch.

Sponsored by UNL's Robert J. Kutak Center for the Teaching and Study of Applied Ethics.

The Ethics Center promotes ethics across the disciplines at UNL. As part of our mission, we host brownbag luncheons throughout the academic year. These monthly luncheons provide an interdisciplinary forum for faculty, students, and staff to discuss relevant case studies that highlight ethical questions arising throughout the disciplines.

If you would like to attend the Oct. 26 brownbag and would like us to supply a lunch, please e-mail Steven Swartzer at swartzer@unlserve.unl.edu by noon on Oct. 26. Or, if you prefer to bring your own lunch, feel free to just show up.

1:00 pm-3:00 pmCreating and Using Web-worthy Photos NEBRASKA UNION
UNL has a collection of photos that are now available on a protected website for use on the UNLcms. Learn about Gallery and how it integrates with UNLcms.

No need to sign up – just show up! Locations in the Union posted as “Content Convergence Conference.”

This session offered as part of a series of Content Convergence Conferences designed for UNL staff members who are charged with creation and upkeep of department and college websites. New tools are now available that will make that task easier. In a world where content is king, thinking through the best way to integrate information, photos, video and other content is critical in communicating effectively with students, faculty, business audiences, visitors seeking information and academic community members from other universities.
This year all UNL communicators—all interested faculty and staff, as well as interested students--are invited to a series of sessions on making the most of your website.

Paul Black from Biochemistry will be presenting on the topic “The Oily Side of Algae.”
4:00 pm-5:00 pmBig Ten National Academy of Sciences Biotechnology/Life Sciences Seminar BEADLE CENTER
“Phenotypic evolution by gene duplication and changes of gene regulatory systems,” will be presented by National Academy of Sciences’ Masatoshi Nei, Pennsylvania State University. Gene duplication is one of the most important mutational mechanisms that generate new genetic variation in the evolutionary process. Recent genomic studies have shown that genome duplication and segmental duplication are crucial in generating new species and new phenotypic characters such as the adaptive immune system in vertebrates and flower formation in angiosperms. Our studies have shown that the evolution of these complex characters are often caused by birth-and-death evolution of many related gene families and their molecular interaction. Recently, however, Sean Carroll (2008) has suggested that phenotypic evolution is primarily caused by changes in gene regulatory systems and that this factor is more important than gene duplication. Our study indicates that this is an overstatement and the molecular changes of coding regions of genes are at least as important as the changes in gene regulation systems. I also would like to indicate that the mutational change of genomic structures is the primary source of evolution, and natural selection is of secondary importance.

A reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. The seminar is free and open to the public.
