SUMMARY:Flu Shot Clinics
DESCRIPTION:The University Health Center offers walk-in flu shot clinics -
  no appointments required. Flu shots are free for UNL students paying UPF
 F facility fees and $30 for faculty and staff. The UHC will file Blue Cro
 ss Blue Shield claims for faculty and staff members under the wellness be
 nefit. You must have your insurance card at the time of vaccination in or
 der to file a Blue Cross Blue Shield claim only. If you have used up your
  wellness benefit for the 2012 coverage period, you will be sent a bill f
 rom the UHC. The clinics will be held from 11:30am to 1pm on the followin

DESCRIPTION:In China, making and eating dumplings is an important activity
  for most families on New Year's Eve.  Serving them is believed to bring 
 prosperity. Dumplings are also eaten year-round and at any time of the da
 y. They can be served as an appetizer, side dish, or as a main course. \n
 \nIn this class you will learn to make three kinds of dumplings using dif
 ferent ingredients and filling.  You can also taste the dumplings made by
  other classmates.\n\nNOTE: Class size is limited to the first 20 partici

SUMMARY:The American Mountain Bicycle
DESCRIPTION:While mountain biking is a popular pastime for thrill-seekers 
 today, it was relatively unheard of until the mid-1980s. Before then, a f
 ew industrious daredevils in Marin County, California, built custom bikes
  to zoom around the mountainous terrain where they lived. These visionary
  individuals combined engineering ingenuity with an artistic eye, using f
 ound parts to create durable bicycles that could withstand the bumps and 
 tumbles of downhill racing. This summer, some of these early mountain bik
 es, on loan from the Monkey Wrench collection, will be on view in Sheldon
 's Great Hall.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Five Decades of Collecting"
DESCRIPTION:"Five Decades of Collecting" commemorates the 50th anniversary
  of the Sheldon Museum of Art’s building, which was designed by renowne
 d architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1963. Each work in the exhibitio
 n was created and acquired after 1960.\n\nThe exhibition reflects art mov
 ements and trends from this period as well as museum directions in collec
 ting. The exhibition highlights important gifts to the museum and draws a
 ttention to areas of strength in its holdings. The installation also cele
 brates new acquisitions and important works that have not recently been o
 n view.\n\nIn honor of Sheldon's 50th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversa
 ry of the Sheldon Art Association, the SAA and the museum purchased a sig
 nificant work by a major artist. The selection, unveiled on Friday, Septe
 mber 7th, is "Invocation" by Lee Krasner. This important painting, probab
 ly begun in the late 1960s, exemplifies Krasner’s transition in style f
 rom using expansive gestural brushstrokes to incorporating more tightly d
 efined graphic elements such as lines and disks.

SUMMARY:Nebraska National Collegiate Juried Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:On Sept. 7 the Department of Art and Art History will open the
  first annual Nebraska National Collegiate Juried Art Exhibition in the E
 isentrager-Howard Gallery. The gallery is located on the first floor of R
 ichards Hall, located just south of Memorial Stadium on the University of
  Nebraska–Lincoln city campus.\n\nThe Nebraska National will be open fr
 om Sept. 7-28 and will showcase the best undergraduate artwork from stude
 nts around the U.S. and Canada. 186 students from 37 states and 2 provinc
 es submitted 495 pieces this first year. Jurors selected 132 pieces from 
 97 artists for the exhibition, including 26 pieces in ceramics, 51 pieces
  in photography and 55 pieces in printmaking.\n\n“We got an excellent r
 esponse for the first year of the competition. There is a wide variety of
  interesting work,” said Department of Art and Art History Interim Chai
 r Pete Pinnell.\n\nThe department intends to make this show an annual eve
 nt. Each year’s exhibition will feature three different categories on a
  two-year rotating basis. This year’s categories are ceramics, printmak
 ing and photography. Next year, the categories will be painting/drawing, 
 sculpture and new genres.\n\nLong-time department supporters Dan and Barb
 ara Howard, of Lincoln, Neb., created the Howard Awards for Excellence fo
 r the first year of the competition. The awards are intended to both rewa
 rd excellence and to attract students to enter the competition.\n\n“The
  Howards very generously gave four awards; a $1,000 First Prize in each o
 f the three categories and a $1,500 prize for Best of Show,” Pinnell sa
 id. “Dan and Barbara’s support has been instrumental to the success o
 f this show and of the entire department."\n\nPinnell said the exhibition
  meets two important goals for the department.\n\n“It will expose our s
 tudents to the best student art work from across the country, and I hope 
 it will also entice the general public to attend our openings and see wha
 t we’re doing here in the department," he said.\n\nIn addition to the g
 allery show, an online catalog for the exhibition will be available on th
 e department’s website (http://www.unl.edu/art). Anyone will be able to
  download the catalog for free or send the file to a self-publishing site
  to get a paper copy printed.\n\n“We’ve started work on the catalog a
 nd will have it on our website by mid-September," Pinnell said.\n\nThe Ne
 braska National will have a special First Friday opening on Sept. 7 from 
 6-8 p.m. The Howard Awards for Excellence will be announced at 7 p.m. The
  event is free and open to the public. Hours for the Eisentrager-Howard G
 allery are Monday-Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.\n\nJurors for this year's exhi
 bition were Sam Chung in ceramics, who is an Assistant Professor in the H
 erberger College of the Arts-School of Art at Arizona State University; C
 arol Panaro-Smith and James Hajicek in photography, who own Alchemy Studi
 o, which produces fine arts photography and workshops in the arts; and Da
 vid Morrison in printmaking, who is Professor of Printmaking at Herron Sc
 hool of Art and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University in Indiana
 polis. All four jurors will be in classes the first week of September.\n\
 nGallery hours are Monday-Thursday, noon to 4 p.m.
