SUMMARY:Composting Demonstration - Lincoln, NE
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to be successful with composting by attending a comp
osting demonstration sponsored by University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extens
ion in Lancaster County and the City of Lincoln Recycling Office. \n\nThe
se demonstrations will show you how to be successful with backyard compos
ting. You will see three types of composting bins and how to use them. Ev
ery family will receive a composting thermometer. \n\nComposting converts
grass clippings, fallen leaves and other landscape leftovers into a nutr
itious soil amendment. It recycles plant nutrients, improves the soil's s
tructure, improves drainage in clay soil and increases the water-holding
capacity of sandy soil. And there's nothing difficult or complicated abou
 t making it.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Five Decades of Collecting"
DESCRIPTION:"Five Decades of Collecting" commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the Sheldon Museum of Art’s building, which was designed by renowne
d architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1963. Each work in the exhibitio
n was created and acquired after 1960.\n\nThe exhibition reflects art mov
ements and trends from this period as well as museum directions in collec
ting. The exhibition highlights important gifts to the museum and draws a
ttention to areas of strength in its holdings. The installation also cele
brates new acquisitions and important works that have not recently been o
 n view.\n\nIn honor of Sheldon's 50th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversa
ry of the Sheldon Art Association, the SAA and the museum purchased a sig
nificant work by a major artist. The selection, unveiled on Friday, Septe
mber 7th, is "Invocation" by Lee Krasner. This important painting, probab
ly begun in the late 1960s, exemplifies Krasner’s transition in style f
rom using expansive gestural brushstrokes to incorporating more tightly d
efined graphic elements such as lines and disks.

SUMMARY:International conference on human trafficking Oct. 11-13
DESCRIPTION:UNL hosts the fourth annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Hu
man Trafficking Oct. 11-13. Known as the pre-eminent academic conference
on the subject, the gathering will feature events open to the public alon
g with dozens of interactive presentations for registered conference part
icipants. \n\nThe goal is to build public awareness about human trafficki
ng while providing a forum for the presentation and discussion of researc
h and professional work and giving those closest to the issue an opportun
ity to network and learn from each other.\n\nHuman trafficking, organizer
s say, is a global problem and one that plays out right here in Nebraska.
It continues to be described as the fastest growing criminal industry in
the world. Some estimates count as many as 27 million people currently e
nslaved worldwide.\n\nThis year’s keynote speaker is Kristiina Kangaspu
nta, deputy director of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justic
e Research Institute. She will join Nebraska assistant attorney general J
ohn Freudenberg -- a member of the Nebraska State Task Force on Human Tra
fficking -- and Nebraska state Sen. Amanda McGill in a panel discussion O
ct. 11 at the University of Nebraska College of Law. A bill introduced by
McGill was signed into law earlier this year which, among other provisio
ns, created a task force that will study human trafficking. The public al
so is invited to this free event, which begins at noon in the Hamann Audi
torium. The panel will focus on the pervasiveness of human trafficking, i
ncluding sex trafficking and forced labor around the world and in Nebrask
a.\n\nFeatured guest James Kofi Annan, who was sold into slavery at age 6
and forced to work in Ghana's fishing villages 17 hours a day, will shar
e his story during a free public lecture at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Nebr
aska Union. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Harris Center for Judaic S
