SUMMARY:Kevin Morano -- Biochemistry / Redox Biology Center Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Kevin Morano, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiol
ogy and Molecular Genetics, University of Texas Medical School at Houston
, will present a seminar entitled "Stress and the single cell: understand
ing cellular roles of the Hsp70 molecular chaperone using yeast". The Hsp
70 molecular chaperone is a ubiquitous and powerful protein remodeler tha
t plays critical roles in cellular protein biogenesis, targeting, repair
and degradation. A number of human diseases including cancer, heart disea
se and a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders (Alzheimer’s, Parki
nson’s and Lou Gehrig’s diseases) result from dysregulation of Hsp70
and other players involved in protein quality control. \n\nMorano is inve
stigating the molecular details of Hsp70 regulation using the model Sacch
aromyces cerevisiae, or baker’s yeast. In doing so he discovered a nove
l protein cofactor required for Hsp70 function, and uncovered a new role
for Hsp70 as a sensor of environmental stress.

SUMMARY:E.N. Thompson Forum on World Issues
DESCRIPTION:Unique among nations, America is deeply religious, religiously
diverse and remarkably tolerant. But in recent decades, the nation’s r
eligious landscape has been reshaped. In his lecture, Putnam will explore
his recent book, “American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us.
Co-authored with David Campbell of the University of Notre Dame, the
book focuses on the role of religion in American public life. Based on da
ta from two of the most comprehensive national surveys on religion and ci
vic engagement ever conducted, the book won the American Political Scienc
e Association’s 2011 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award for the best book
on government, politics, or international affairs.\n\nAcclaimed author an
d political scientist Robert D. Putnam has helped influence the way peopl
e think about the fabric of American society. Putnam, who is Malkin Profe
ssor of Public Policy at Harvard University, has written more than a doze
n books, including “Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of American
Community,” and “Making Democracy Work.” Both are among the most c

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Five Decades of Collecting"
DESCRIPTION:"Five Decades of Collecting" commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the Sheldon Museum of Art’s building, which was designed by renowne
d architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1963. Each work in the exhibitio
n was created and acquired after 1960.\n\nThe exhibition reflects art mov
ements and trends from this period as well as museum directions in collec
ting. The exhibition highlights important gifts to the museum and draws a
ttention to areas of strength in its holdings. The installation also cele
brates new acquisitions and important works that have not recently been o
 n view.\n\nIn honor of Sheldon's 50th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversa
ry of the Sheldon Art Association, the SAA and the museum purchased a sig
nificant work by a major artist. The selection, unveiled on Friday, Septe
mber 7th, is "Invocation" by Lee Krasner. This important painting, probab
ly begun in the late 1960s, exemplifies Krasner’s transition in style f
rom using expansive gestural brushstrokes to incorporating more tightly d
efined graphic elements such as lines and disks.
