SUMMARY:John J. Mieyal -- Biochemistry / Redox Biology Center Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Dr. John J. Mieyal, Professor and Vice-Chairman of Pharmacolog
y, Case Western Reserve University will present the seminar "Reversible P
rotein S-Glutathionylation in Redox Regulation -- Implications for Thiol
Homeostasis and Signaling in Health and Disease" on Tuesday, October 30,
 2012 at 4PM in N172 Beadle.\n\nDr. John Mieyal received his B.S. degree i
n Chemistry from John Carroll University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in B
iochemistry from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Mieyal did postdoct
oral re-search studies at Brandeis University, and he began his independe
nt academic career at Northwestern University with a joint appointment in
the Departments of Pharmacology and Biochemistry.\n\nDr. Mieyal is Profe
ssor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology where he conduct
s his research program and oversees the educational mission of the Depart
ment. He holds joint appointments in the departments of Chemistry and Env
ironmental Health Sciences, and in the Comprehensive Cancer Center. He al
so holds a Research Chemist appointment at the Louis B. Stokes Veterans A
ffairs Medical Research Center. Current research emphasis in Dr. Mieyalâ
€™s laboratory is focused on mechanisms of alterations in redox regulatio
n in Parkinson’s disease and cardiovascular diseases, both prevalent am
ong the elderly. The research team has appreciated funding from the Natio
nal Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs.\n\nDr. M
ieyal is recognized internationally for advancing knowledge of redox regu
lation and signal transduction in health and disease, especially involvin
g the glutaredoxin and thioredoxin enzyme systems. Professor Mieyal has b
een a featured speaker at many international symposia on Redox Regulation
and Thiol Homeostasis in recent years, including those sponsored by the
American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the International
Redox Network, and the International Gordon Conferences. He has served o
n scientific review boards for the American Heart Association and the Dep
artment of Veterans Affairs, and he is recently was guest editor for a sp
ecial Forum Issue of the premier journal Antioxidants and Redox Regulatio
 n. Besides recognition for his research, Dr. Mieyal has won several Unive
rsity awards for his medical and graduate school teaching and mentorship,
most recently the first annual Inamori Award for Excellence in Mentoring
, and he has served on the Pharmacology Committee of the National Board o
 f Medical Examiners.
