y, Case Western Reserve University will present the seminar "Reversible P
rotein S-Glutathionylation in Redox Regulation -- Implications for Thiol
Homeostasis and Signaling in Health and Disease" on Tuesday, October 30,
 2012 at 4PM in N172 Beadle.\n\nDr. John Mieyal received his B.S. degree i
n Chemistry from John Carroll University. He earned his Ph.D. degree in B
iochemistry from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Mieyal did postdoct
oral re-search studies at Brandeis University, and he began his independe
nt academic career at Northwestern University with a joint appointment in
the Departments of Pharmacology and Biochemistry.\n\nDr. Mieyal is Profe
ssor and Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology where he conduct
s his research program and oversees the educational mission of the Depart
ment. He holds joint appointments in the departments of Chemistry and Env
ironmental Health Sciences, and in the Comprehensive Cancer Center. He al
so holds a Research Chemist appointment at the Louis B. Stokes Veterans A
ffairs Medical Research Center. Current research emphasis in Dr. Mieyalâ
€™s laboratory is focused on mechanisms of alterations in redox regulatio
n in Parkinson’s disease and cardiovascular diseases, both prevalent am
ong the elderly. The research team has appreciated funding from the Natio
nal Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs.\n\nDr. M
ieyal is recognized internationally for advancing knowledge of redox regu
lation and signal transduction in health and disease, especially involvin
g the glutaredoxin and thioredoxin enzyme systems. Professor Mieyal has b
een a featured speaker at many international symposia on Redox Regulation
and Thiol Homeostasis in recent years, including those sponsored by the
American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the International
Redox Network, and the International Gordon Conferences. He has served o

SUMMARY:SNR Outreach Seminar
DESCRIPTION:The wetlands of Nebraska are especially notable because, not o
nly do they comprise a greater percentage of the state's land mass than i
s true of\nany of the six surrounding states, but of the great ecological
diversity they present. The variety of wetland types in the state suppor
ts a remarkable\nabundance and range of wetland plants and animals, in so
me cases species that are regionally or nationally rare, and even endange
red. The greatest number and acreage of wetlands in the state are\nassoci
ated with the Nebraska Sandhills, which depend directly on the Ogallala a
quifer, but the highly alkaline wetlands in western Nebraska and in the v
icinity of Lincoln support some of the state's\nmost specialized and rare
st species of both plants and animals.\n\nThe Great Plains of North Ameri
ca represents one of the most biogeographically diverse regions of the en
tire continent. Nebraska lies at the heart of this diversity; one area th
at well illustrates this\nis southwestern Nebraska. The diversity of hab
itats, lakes, rivers, and grasslands, has led to an unusually high number
of bird species being found in the area. This area has probably the high
est bird species diversity of any comparably sized area in the Great Plai
ns north of Texas. The central Platte River with the adjacent Rainwater\n
Basins supports one of the most magnificent, and critically important, bi
rd migratory stopover areas in the Great Plains.\n\nPaul Johnsgard author
of Wetlands of Nebraska and Mary Bomberger Brown author of Birds of Sou
thwest Nebraska will do a meet and greet with the public at 6 pm followed
by a presentation at 7 pm. A book signing will follow the presentation.
\n\nThe books will be available for purchase in the Nebraska Maps & More
Store.\n\nAt 6:30 pm birds from Pioneer's Park Nature Center will be avai
 lable for viewing.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Five Decades of Collecting"
DESCRIPTION:"Five Decades of Collecting" commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the Sheldon Museum of Art’s building, which was designed by renowne
d architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1963. Each work in the exhibitio
n was created and acquired after 1960.\n\nThe exhibition reflects art mov
ements and trends from this period as well as museum directions in collec
ting. The exhibition highlights important gifts to the museum and draws a
ttention to areas of strength in its holdings. The installation also cele
brates new acquisitions and important works that have not recently been o
 n view.\n\nIn honor of Sheldon's 50th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversa
ry of the Sheldon Art Association, the SAA and the museum purchased a sig
nificant work by a major artist. The selection, unveiled on Friday, Septe
mber 7th, is "Invocation" by Lee Krasner. This important painting, probab
ly begun in the late 1960s, exemplifies Krasner’s transition in style f
rom using expansive gestural brushstrokes to incorporating more tightly d
efined graphic elements such as lines and disks.
