SUMMARY:First Friday Reception Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Drawn to Fashion: the illustrations of Mary Mitchell\n \nOctob
er 22 - November 30, 2012\n \n The Friends of the Robert Hillestad Textil
es Gallery will host a First Friday event November 2 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m
.\n \nOmaha fashion illustrator Mary Mitchell worked during a preiod when
fashion illustration's role was critical to successful commerce in every
thing from haute couture to ready-to-wear. In the 1960s and 70s, pages o
f the fashion press were filled with drawn images that captured the energ
y of the industry at its peak. That period of dynamic social and cultura
l change impacted fashion but was in turn affected by it. This is one of
the critical dimensions of fashion in general: it is inseparable from t
he age that spawns it, and it serves inevitably as a barometer of that ag
e's tendencies and unique character. In Drawn to Fashion: the illustrat
ions of Mary Mitchell, the post-War period of American affluence and exce
 ptionalism comes convincingly to life.

SUMMARY:Opera: O Pioneers!
DESCRIPTION:UNL Opera presents O Pioneers!, Friday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m. an
 d Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m., in Kimball Recital Hall.\n\nA pre-performance
talk will be presented by William Shomos, director of O Pioneers! in the
Lower Level of Kimball Recital Hall, 45 minutes before each performance.
\n\nTickets: Adults $20, student/senior $10. Available at the Lied Cente
r box office, 402-472-4747 or 1-800-432-3231.\n\n“Flaming like the wild
roses,\nSinging like the larks over plowed fields,\nFlashing like a star
out of the twilight;\nYouth with its insupportable sweetness,\nIts fierc
e necessity,\nIts sharp desire,\nSinging and singing,\nOut of the lips of
  silence,\nOut of the earthy dusk.”\n — Willa Cather\n\nLove, desire
, longing; death and destiny--these are the very stuff of opera, and cent
ral themes of Willa Cather’s 1913 literary masterpiece O Pioneers! UNL
Opera brings Cather’s timeless story to the Kimball Hall stage with th
e premiere of the newly revised opera by UNL Composition Professor and Di
rector of Orchestras Tyler White.\n\nSet against the panoramic sweep of t
he southern Nebraska prairie, O Pioneers! tells the story of Alexandra Be
rgson, a fiercely independent landowner whose devotion to her land and it
s promise may cost her the love of her life. The novel also is the story
of Alexandra’s younger brother Emil, whose bright future is clouded by
his hopeless passion for Marie, the young wife of a neighbor. These univ
ersal, archetypal human stories are woven together with a lyrical, melodi
ous, vividly colorful musical score conveying the emotional intensity of
the stories and the grandeur of their environmental setting. William Sho
mos, UNL Director of Opera, stage directs; the composer, Tyler Goodrich W
 hite, conducts.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: "Five Decades of Collecting"
DESCRIPTION:"Five Decades of Collecting" commemorates the 50th anniversary
of the Sheldon Museum of Art’s building, which was designed by renowne
d architect Philip Johnson and opened in 1963. Each work in the exhibitio
n was created and acquired after 1960.\n\nThe exhibition reflects art mov
ements and trends from this period as well as museum directions in collec
ting. The exhibition highlights important gifts to the museum and draws a
ttention to areas of strength in its holdings. The installation also cele
brates new acquisitions and important works that have not recently been o
 n view.\n\nIn honor of Sheldon's 50th Anniversary and the 125th Anniversa
ry of the Sheldon Art Association, the SAA and the museum purchased a sig
nificant work by a major artist. The selection, unveiled on Friday, Septe
mber 7th, is "Invocation" by Lee Krasner. This important painting, probab
ly begun in the late 1960s, exemplifies Krasner’s transition in style f
rom using expansive gestural brushstrokes to incorporating more tightly d
efined graphic elements such as lines and disks.
