“Flaming like the wild roses,
Singing like the larks over plowed fields,
Flashing like a star out of the twilight;
Youth with its insupportable sweetness,
Its fierce necessity,
Its sharp desire,
Singing and singing,
Out of the lips of silence,
Out of the earthy dusk.”
— Willa Cather
Love, desire, longing; death and destiny--these are the very stuff of opera, and central themes of Willa Cather’s 1913 literary masterpiece O Pioneers! UNL Opera brings Cather’s timeless story to the Kimball Hall stage with the premiere of the newly revised opera by UNL Composition Professor and Director of Orchestras Tyler White.
Set against the panoramic sweep of the southern Nebraska prairie, O Pioneers! tells the story of Alexandra Bergson, a fiercely independent landowner whose devotion to her land and its promise may cost her the love of her life. The novel also is the story of Alexandra’s younger brother Emil, whose bright future is clouded by his hopeless passion for Marie, the young wife of a neighbor. These universal, archetypal human stories are woven together with a lyrical, melodious, vividly colorful musical score conveying the emotional intensity of the stories and the grandeur of their environmental setting. William Shomos, UNL Director of Opera, stage directs; the composer, Tyler Goodrich White, conducts.
