SUMMARY:SBS Seminar- Robin Chazdon
DESCRIPTION:The process of secondary forest regeneration in tropical regio
ns is poorly understood, with few long-term, permanent plot studies. Sinc
e 1997 we have been monitoring annual vegetation dynamics of trees and se
edlings in lowland areas of northeastern Costa Rica that were formerly us
ed for cattle pasture. Despite pronounced changes in forest structure, sp
ecies density and species richness of tree species showed little change o
ver 13 years and species composition of trees in 20-45 year old secondary
forests remains distinct from mature forests in the same region. In cont
rast, seedling richness and composition has converged with mature forests
in the area. I discuss trends in community assembly of seedlings and tre
es during succession in relation to functional groups and phylogenetic re
latedness. Landscape composition and local neighborhood effects exert str
ong effects on patterns of tree recruitment, growth, and mortality.\n\nHo
