SUMMARY:Giovanni Gadda -- Biochemistry/Redox Biology Center Seminar
DESCRIPTION:"Choline Oxidase and Related Systems" will be presented by Dr.
Giovanni Gadda, Associate Professor, Chemistry Department, Georgia State
University. My scientific interest is in the general area of the mechani
stic enzymology of redox enzymes, with a specific interest in flavin-depe
ndent enzymes. The long-term objectives are to understand how enzymes can
influence the energetics of reaction intermediates and transition states
. These aspects are being studied by steady state kinetics and rapid reac
tion techniques using pH, viscosity and kinetic isotope effects, as well
as mutagenesis and X-ray crystallography. Several enzymes from diverse ce
llular sources are currently investigated, including choline oxidase, nit
ronate monooxygenase, glycolate oxidase, D-arginine dehydrogenase, and ot
hers. Significant advances on the understanding of the enzyme-cvatalyzed,
flavin-dependent mechanisms for alcohol and amine oxidation have been ob
tained. Results from my laboratory aided in the reclassification of 2-nit
ropropane dioxygenase as nitronate monooxygenase by the IUBMB in 2010.
