The radical and transformative developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) offer unprecedented opportunities to promote cancer control and enhance population and individual health. However, the current context in which these technologies are being deployed—where cancer incidence and mortality and communication are characterized by inequalities among different racial/ethnic and socioeconomic status groups—raises important questions for cancer communication research, policy, and practice. Drawing on illustrative data, this talk characterizes the communications revolution and elucidates on its implications for health, with a particular focus on communication inequalities and health disparities.
Health Communication scholar Dr. Vish Viswanath is an associate professor in the Department of Society, Human Development, and Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, faculty member with the Center for Community-Based Research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and director of the Health Communication Core of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center. http://viswanathlab.org/
