The paintings, photographs, and prints that comprise this year’s Sheldon Statewide exhibition explore the various ways artists portray nature. Spanning 150 years, these works—which range from early botanical studies to contemporary photographs—each present unique and diverse interpretations of the natural environment. William Sharp’s beautiful chromolithograph provides an intimate view of a blooming plant, while Albert Bierstadt’s expansive mountain landscape depicts the West as an American Eden. Light-filled, colorful paintings by Robert Gilder and Willard LeRoy Metcalf contrast with the stark, formal beauty of photographs by Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston. Additionally, contemporary artists Seiko Tachibana and Doug and Mike Starn examine how science and technology impact our view of the world. Although varying in subject, style, and technique, these works all speak to the enduring fascination artists have with nature.

The 28th Sheldon Statewide exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the Sheldon Art Association, Nebraska Arts Council and Nebraska Cultural Endowment, Farmers Mutual Insurance of Nebraska, and James and Rhonda Seacrest.
