An Odyssey of Dreams presents Alkazzi’s work from 2003–2012. These enigmatic paintings reference the mystical aspect of nature, reflecting the artist’s ongoing, deep engagement with the spiritual and metaphysical facets of abstraction. Through this exhibition, the viewer is transported into a sensual world of soaring skyscapes, enchanting landscapes, and verdant flora and vegetation. Using intense colors and lyrical forms, the artist aspires to capture the “Awe at the sublime Soul within Life… .”

Basil Alkazzi’s long and distinguished career spans four decades. Born in 1938 in Kuwait, Alkazzi attended art school in London, where he exhibited regularly from 1978 to 1987 at the city’s progressive Drian Gallery. Since 1985, the artist has lived in New York at various times. His work has been shown throughout the United States and is in the collections of over two dozen museums.

This exhibition is curated by Judith K. Brodsky, Distinguished Professor Emerita, Rutgers University. She is the founding director of the Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions at Rutgers and co-founder and co-director of the Rutgers Institute for Women and Art.

Support for this exhibition comes from the Sheldon Art Association, Nebraska Arts Council, and Nebraska Cultural Endowment.
