The Nebraska Horse Welfare Coalition is hosting an Equine Welfare Short Course on May 14. The course will run from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds in Sidney.

The short course is designed to prepare law enforcement on conducting investigations concerning neglected and abused horses and laws pertaining to livestock abuse and neglect. Focus will be on the management and treatment of debilitated horses and recognition of grossly inadequate feeding programs, health practices, facilities and management techniques.

Participants at the workshop will be among the first to get training on the new Horse Body Condition Scoring (BCS) app that has been developed by eXtension Horses and University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension. Estimating body condition is an important piece of information to determine overall horse well-being. The app will calculate the body condition of a horse, take a picture and record it with the date.

Lecture and training topics at the short course include:
• Nebraska law and the equine investigation – understanding the criminal procedures
• Veterinarians role in equine cruelty and neglect
• Documenting the condition of horses using the HorseBCS app
• Standards of care
• Acceptable feed

The cost to register for the short course is $50 per person. To register online visit http://animalscience.unl.edu/nebraska-horse-welfarecoalition.
