Nebraska Extension in southeast Nebraska is sponsoring its 10th Annual Southeast Nebraska Diversified Ag Tour on Friday, September 11th. This tour focuses on local food production and sustainability and we will visit some established farms and very new farms in southeast Nebraska. This tour is for anyone; Extension Educators or Specialists, farmers, consumers, Master Gardeners or just someone that wants to learn more about local food production, sustainability and entrepreneurship in southeast Nebraska.

We will be traveling in vans for the tour and have a number of pickup points in southeast Nebraska for tour participants.

This year’s tour will focus on three farms in southern Lancaster County and one farm in Gage. The first stop of the tour is at Olive Creek Farm, along Highway 43, south of Bennet and just southeast of Panama, NE in southeast Lancaster County. Jill and Charlie Heng have a High Tunnel and producer vegetables, and they also raise pasture poultry and eggs on their farm. They sell produce off their farm and have a modest CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).

The second stop on the tour is Prairieland Dairy near Firth. They have been producing and selling milk in southeast Nebraska for a few years. They utilize cover crops, manure and compost in their farming operation and also sell compost. We will have lunch at the dairy and enjoy some of their ice cream as well.

The third stop of the tour is Hollister Farms near Princeton near Highway 77. Hollister Farms is a certified All Natural Produce Farm. The Hollisters produce and sell farm fresh eggs, honey, grass-fed lambs and natural soaps and lotions. They have recently started raising swine as well. The final stop on the tour is at Sunny Slope Farm near Filley, NE. Sunny Slope Farm has a local CSA farm and also has on-farm sales and at the Beatrice Farmers Market. It is owned and operated by Merlin and Rita Friesen. Besides vegetables, they produce strawberries, honey, free-range eggs, a limited number of broilers and turkeys and grass-fed beef.

Cost of this tour is $20 and includes lunch and transportation. If you interested in participating in the tour, please register by calling Nebraska Extension in Nemaha (402) 274-4755 or Johnson (402) 335-3669) Counties by Tuesday September 8th.
