DESCRIPTION:What does airborne particulate matter look \nlike? How do we d
 evelop quantitative \ndescriptors for particles of complex \nmorphology? 
 How do we see inside \nviruses? How can we overcome the \nchallenges of m
 embrane protein \ncrystallography? New paradigms in \nstructural biology 
 and aerosol dynamics \nare being written by the incredible \nbrightness a
 nd ultrashort pulses available \nfrom an X-ray free electron laser (XFEL)
 , \nthe Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at \nthe SLAC National Acceler
 ator Laboratory. \nXFELs can peer inside the individual \nairborne partic
 les and are a sensitive probe \nof particle crystallinity. These capabili
 ties \noffer unparalleled insights into biological \nsamples, such as vir
 uses and crystallized \nproteins, and airborne \nparticulate matter impor
 tant to climate \nscience and manufacturing. This talk will \ndescribe ho
 w this powerful new 'diffract \nbefore destroy' tool makes it possible to
  \ncapture femtoseconds long snapshots of \nairborne particulate matter w
 ith 20-40 nm \nresolution (Loh et al Nature 2012), \nincluding particles
