Dr. Sherine Chan, Assistant Professor, Department of Drug Discovery and Biomedical Sciences, Medical University of South Carolina, will present the seminar “Zebrafish models of mitochondrial disease” on Tues. Nov. 5, 2013 at 4:00 PM in N172 Beadle Center.

Our long-term goal is to determine how disrupting mitochondrial energetics harms embryonic development and health in later life. Our studies show that inhibition of mitochondrial energetics via genetic or chemical means leads to specific defects in embryonic development, especially in tissues with high energy requirements. We are now using our newly developed zebrafish models for drug discovery, as there are few good treatments for mitochondrial dysfunction.
