“Protein quality control in stress management and metabolic regulation” will be presented by Dr. Randy Hampton, Professor of Biological Sciences, UCSD, La Jolla, CA.

The Hampton laboratory is dedicated to understanding cellular quality control (PQC) pathways, by which cells detect and destroy misfolded or damaged proteins. These routes of protein destruction are found in all kingdoms of life and play critical roles in alleviation of proteotoxic stress. Surprisingly, quality control degradation is also employed in the control of normal proteins, by mechanisms that capitalize on the exquisite specificity of quality control degradation. This regulatory use of PQC is employed in the of physiological control of numerous cellular processes, and suggests a novel avenue for pharmaceutical targeting of clinically important proteins.
