LINCOLN—Photographer Michael Forsberg is the speaker for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum’s Young Lecture Nov. 8 in Lincoln. Forsberg has been photographing the wild creatures and the landscapes of America’s natural grasslands, from Canada to Mexico, for more than 20 years. His presentation is titled “Roots of Hope—Twenty Years of Photographing Flyover Country.”
Forsberg sees photography as “a powerful witness… that can help communicate to people why something matters. Conservation photography is an active and powerful tool to begin this process, to start the conversation, to call for action. Time is short.”
Forsberg has published many award-winning books, including On Ancient Wings—The Sandhill Cranes of North America, Crane Song and Great Plains—America’s Lingering Wild. He has been published in National Geographic, The Nature Conservancy magazine, Audubon Magazine, NEBRASKAland Magazine and many others. He has produced documentaries for PBS. But perhaps most importantly, said Arboretum Director Jackie Urkoski, “the overarching thing Michael Forsberg has done is to make all of us more attentive and careful with the beauty we see around us.”
Forsberg is the featured speaker of the 2014 Joseph and Dorothy Young Memorial Lectures in Horticulture at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at the new Innovation Campus auditorium and banquet hall, 2021 Transformation Drive in Lincoln.
Ticket prices start at $15. A VIP reception at 6 p.m. with heavy hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to visit with Michael before the presentation is also available. Space is limited. Purchase tickets at arboretum.unl.edu/classes-tickets or call 402-472-2971.
The Joseph and Dorothy Young Memorial Lectures in Horticulture honor the late Dr. Joseph Young who served the university from 1958 to 1980 as chair of the Department of Horticulture and founder and first director of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. A visionary advocate for landscape beautification, he helped establish Maxwell Arboretum, UNL Botanical Garden and Arboretum and the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, host for the lecture.
