Garden Tours Highlight Tri-city Arboretums

Seven different gardens will be toured, all very different in appearance and mission, but each offers ideas for plant selection, landscape design and management. Participants are encouraged to come with questions, landscape problems or even photos for discussion during the informal tours.

Thursday, October 13
10:00-noon. University of Nebraska at Kearney, “Landscape Design with Trees in Mind.” Led by curator Jason Hallam, the tour will start on the east side of Founders Hall on the southeast corner of campus about 9th Ave. and Highway 30. Please note that a required parking permit will be handed out for those who park on campus.
2-3:00 p.m. Kearney Cemetery, “Trees in Tight Places and Developing a Tree Nursery.” Led by curator Steve Baye. Park near the main entrance to cemetery at 4400 I Ave.
3:30-4:30 p.m. Harmon Park, “If These Trees Could Talk—The Value of History,” led by curator Alan Roesler. Meet on east side of the park along 5th Ave. near display gardens.
5-6:00 p.m. Yanney Park. “An Arboretum and Greenway Corridor.” Led by Rocky Steinbrink. Meet at south parking lot of the park at 2020 W. 11th.

Friday October 14
9-11:00 a.m. Hastings College. “Stormwater Management and Tree Campus USA.” Led by Will Locke. Meet on the west side of the Morrison-Reeves Science Center on the southeast corner of campus near E. 7th St and N. Ash Ave. Parking is available in lots west and north of Morrison-Reeves.
12-2:00 p.m. Highland Park Arboretum. “Incredible Young Tree Diversity.” Led by Ron Seymour and other members of the Highland Park Arboretum committee. Meet on the south side of the Hastings Museum at 14 St and North Burlington Ave and use museum parking lots.
2:30-4:00 p.m. Grand Island Sucks Lake Park. “Young Tree Pruning and Care.” Gregg Bostelman and Barry Burrows will lead the tour of this relatively new affiliate of NSA. The park is located at 809 S. Harrison St.
