SUMMARY:International Town Hall Meeting - Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:The topic is global climate change. The conversation should be
interesting , especially with a United Nations summit (http://topics.edi
tion.cnn.com/topics/copenhagen/) on the topic scheduled for next month in
Copenhagen, Denmark. We'll spend a fast-paced hour discussing this topic
over a live Internet connection with students and faculty from Norway, K
osovo and the University of Mississippi Journalism School. \nThe U.N. cli
mate summit in Copenhagen in December aims to set new greenhouse gas emis
sions agreements between countries. On Feb. 2, 2007, the United Nations s
cientific panel studying climate change declared that the evidence of a w
arming trend is "unequivocal," and that human activity has "very likely"
been the driving force in that change over the last 50 years. \nThe idea
of next month's U.N. climate conference in Copenhagen ending with a polit
ical deal, rather than a legally binding agreement, disappointed developi
ng nations already suffering severe droughts, floods and other catastroph
es blamed on rising temperatures. The shift follows acknowledgment that se
veral countries, including the United States, may not be politically read
y to sign a legal pact by next month. \nIf you'd like to attend just drop
an e-mail to associate professor Barney McCoy at bmccoy2@unl.edu.
