When presenter Karen Creswell retired from a career as a registered dietitian nutritionist, she decided “the best place to continue to teach nutrition during retirement was in a garden.” She has followed that dream for nine years at Beattie Elementary School. What began as a vegetable garden has expanded to include many gardens. All the gardens highlight subjects in the school curriculum.
Although the talk will cover topics related to a children’s garden, Creswell said they’ll be just as helpful to homeowners: techniques for reducing garden chores (a must when maintaining a large school property); and choosing vegetable varieties that “produce well, have good flavor and are disease-resistant so there will be plenty of good-tasting produce to send home with 400 school children.” Creswell said, “There will be something for everyone. We will set a fine table for you, inviting you into the world of produce and more.”
Anyone wishing to listen in can take part online at: connect.unl.edu/brownbag. The presentations are also available afterwards at arboretum.unl.edu/brown-bags. This is part of a brown-bag series on “all things green” sponsored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, UNL Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, UNL Garden Friends and Friends of Maxwell Arboretum.
