The UNL Small Jazz Ensembles are comprised of students at both the undergraduate and graduate level. This concert features four ensembles coached by DMA Jazz Studies majors Russell Zimmer, Aaron Stroessner, Max Stehr, and Jesse McBee. In addition, one advanced ensemble coached by faculty member Dr. Darryl White will be featured. Each group will perform two or three selections, largely drawn from the standard jazz repetoire. While some song arrangements are brought in by the various instructors, student ensemble members also contribute to the concert program as well. Instrumentation varies from group to group; this particular concert includes the traditional piano, bass, and drums, but also the less typical clarinet, violin, vibraphone, and voice.

For some of the students, improvising is a new and challenging technique that takes them quite far from their comfort zone of practicing and performing purely written music. Additionally, small jazz ensembles interact in a more intimate manner that is not entirely possible with a larger group.
