Peteris Vasks was born in Aizpute, Latvia. Only after the violinist Gidon Kremer began championing his works in the 1990s did Vasks became known outside of Latvia. He is now one of the most influential and praised composers in Europe. Ms. Brech performed Vasks’ Flute Concerto last year and interviewed the composer for Flute aktuell magazine about his work. He recommended these two pieces for our ensemble.

Originally written for mixed choir, The Fruit of Silence is based on a prayer by Mother Teresa. In an interview with Franziska Brech, Peteris Vasks suggested that this piece would work well for the Trans-Nebraska Players. The text of the prayer is as follows:

The fruit of silence is prayer

The fruit of prayer is faith

The fruit of faith is love

The fruit of love is service

The fruit of service is peace.

Mélanie Hélène Bonis, commonly known as Mel Bonis, was a French composer who composed more than 300 pieces of wide variety. Her parents forbid her to take piano lessons as a child, so she taught herself until the age of 12, when her talent was recognized by a friend who persuaded her reluctant parents. Eventually she came to the acquaintance of Cesar Franck, who allowed her entrance into the Paris Conservatoire in 1876. Her music is mostly in Romantic style. She composed a large number of chamber pieces, and we are pleased to perform this piece, which could be considered a piano concerto with lush accompaniment of just six instruments.

The Trans-Nebraska Players is a 5-piece chamber ensemble from three different Nebraska collegiate institutions including the Glenn Korff School of Music’s David C. Neely and Clark Potter.
