“De-Canonizing Afro-Korean Connections” involves an open discussion of how the Human and Diversity relate to one another, with regard to the formation of canons of knowledge, specifically literature. Lurking in discourses of diversity is a fundamental tension with the Human, a tension which is seldom examined—perhaps because it is taken for granted, but most likely because it involves truths uncomfortable to basic, modern notions of ontology. The methodological gap here has very real ethical implications. Our brown bag will consider the idea of the canon in light of the Afro-Asian/Oriental perspectives in which our research project, and our lives, are centered.
