On March 2, 2017 Alexandre Da Costa, Assistant Professor, Theoretical, Cultural and International Studies in Education at the University of Alberta will present “Towards hemispheric critique of the post-racial.” He notes how much academic analysis and activist critique of practices deemed ‘post-racial’ come out of the history and experience of the United States. His talk takes a broader historical and spatial perspective on the ‘post-racial’ to ask: what can we learn and do about hemispheric racial formations through an analysis that draws together expressions of post-racial thought and discourse from diverse locations in the Americas? In what ways does viewing the ‘post-racial’ hemispherically allow us to not only identify and understand its various permutations, but also perhaps forge solidarity across related place-based struggles against racism and white supremacy?
