On March 2, 2017 Alexandre Da Costa, Assistant Professor, Theoretical, Cultural and International Studies in Education at the University of Alberta will present “Towards hemispheric critique of the post-racial.” He notes how much academic analysis and activist critique of practices deemed ‘post-racial’ come out of the history and experience of the United States. His talk takes a broader historical and spatial perspective on the ‘post-racial’ to ask: what can we learn and do about hemispheric racial formations through an analysis that draws together expressions of post-racial thought and discourse from diverse locations in the Americas? In what ways does viewing the ‘post-racial’ hemispherically allow us to not only identify and understand its various permutations, but also perhaps forge solidarity across related place-based struggles against racism and white supremacy?

The research of Alexandre Da Costa, assistant professor of Theoretical, Cultural and International Studies in Education at the University of Alberta, focuses on various areas including: race and racism, racial ideologies, cultural politics, the politics of knowledge, decoloniality, education, state policy, and development in the Americas.
