Back by popular demand: the Confucius Institute Cooking Class. This year we will be demonstrating two dishes: Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce and Sweet and Sour Soup. The class will demonstrate step-by-step instructions and students will have the opportunity to give it a try.

Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce is a classic Chinese dish. It is also known by the confusing name yuxiang rouse, or “Fish-flavored pork,” even though it has no fish and doesn’t even taste like it. It contains shredded pork generally mixed with several thinly sliced strips of various vegetables, such as carrots, bamboo shoots, green peppers, and sometimes wood ear mushrooms stir-fried in a either a sweet, spicy, or garlicky sauce.

Sweet and Sour Soup, or suanla tang, is a light soup generally made from wood ear mushrooms, bamboo shoots, ground pork, and chicken stock with a sweet, sour, and slightly spicy taste.
