Many people gather plants and other natural elements to bring indoors, but Bob Henrickson, Horticulture Program Coordinator for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, says often they wait and collect too late in the season, “It’s best to gather flowers, pods, seedheads and grasses before they’re fully mature.” Collecting earlier in the season tends to make for more colorful, less fragile arrangements.

Henrickson will have suggestions about plants to gather and how to use them in vases, pots, swags, Christmas tree ornaments, wreathes, etc.

Anyone wishing to listen in can take part online at: connect.unl.edu/brownbag. The presentations are also available afterwards as pdfs at arboretum.unl.edu/brown-bags. This is part of a brown-bag series on “all things green” sponsored by the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
