A new exhibition at the Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery is exploring quilting in India.

The exhibition, “Patchwork and Quilts of North Karanataka, India,” shows through Nov. 17. The quilts emphasize the diversity of patchwork in the region of southern India.

The quilts and information about them were gathered by Shubha Bennur, former faculty of the Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design. In travels through the region, Bennur interviewed a number of quilters and their family members. Through these quilts, the exhibition provides insights into the people, history, and contemporary customs of North Karnataka.

Selections from the collection of the International Quilt Study Center and Museum complement a group of patchworks made by Laxmidevi Gavai, an artist and professor from Gadag, North Karnataka, India.

Admission is free and open to the public.
