In celebration of the Confucius Institute’s 10th year anniversary, we are holding a film festival for three Chinese film titles free and open to the public at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center from October 20th to October 26th. For tickets, just show up at the theater at the times listed below. All films are subtitled in English.

The Mermaid (R) ???

Unknown to mankind, they have long lived side-by-side with a race of mermaids. When a real estate developer, Xuan, begins a sea reclamation projects, the mermaids rise up to proect their homes from human enroachment. Bearing family secrets, the mermaid Shan is dispatched to stop Xuan, falling in love with the human Shan, but mankind’s greed may stand in the way.

Rated R for fantasy violence.

Black Coal Thin Ice (NR) ????

A visual master piece in a film noir style tells the story of a washed up ex cop and his former partner who decide to follow up on an investigation of a series of murders at coal field that ended their careers in sham, when identical murders begin again. These new murders seem to center around a young woman who works at a laundry mat who once dated these men and ice skates. Is she the perpetrator or the victim?

In 1967, a young Beijing student, Chen Zhen, is sent to live among the nomadic herdsmen of Inner Mongolia. Caught between the advance of civilization from the south and the nomads’ traditional enemies - the marauding wolves - to the north; humans and animals, residents and invaders alike, struggle to find their true place in the world.

Rated PG-13 for animal violence and brief sexuality
