In December to set the stage for an exploration of the art of painting, the Wind Ensemble will begin with Matthew Tommasini’s Torn Canvases inspired by the abstract expressionist painting style of Jackson Pollack. Turning inward, the program continues with Joseph Turrin’s intimate Lullaby for Noah before it moves outward once again to Leslie Bassett’s striking Colors and Contours. Finally, the band will present a full performance of Adam Schoenberg’s Picture Studies, a 21st century take on Moussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition set in the Nelson-Atkins museum.

Directed by Carolyn Barber, the Wind Ensemble is the university’s premiere concert band. Its select mission is to provide instrumentalists of advanced technical proficiency a pre-professional ensemble experience. With an emphasis on 20th century American compositions, the Wind Ensemble’s repertoire reflects the most recent technical and textural innovations, as well as the rich tradition of wind and percussion music extending back to the Renaissance.
