Based on her path-breaking new book, Debating Yoga and Mindfulness in Public Schools: Reforming Secular Education or Reestablishing Religion?, Professor Candy Brown will explain the appeal and most common objections to public-school yoga, mindfulness, and other meditation programs. Are such programs “secular” or “religious”—or both? How strong is scientific evidence of efficacy, safety, and appropriateness as universal interventions? Should educators be concerned about cultural appropriation and cultural imperialism? Brown probes these questions and the legal and ethical stakes. And Brown proposes that respect for cultural and religious diversity and informed consent can best be achieved through opt-in programs.

Candy Gunther Brown, Ph.D., Harvard University, is a professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University. After her talk, Brown will be available to answer questions and sign copies of her book (for sale at a discount).
