Awareness of efficient freshwater use is becoming more important than ever due to moratoriums, limitations in availability of water and increase in water use due to several reasons. To increase efficiency of water use for irrigation, new irrigation strategies need to be developed and implemented. Fixed rate irrigation (FRI), or the uniform application depth of irrigation water over crop fields is the conventional method in the midwestern United States. Limited irrigation and variable rate irrigation (VRI) have been introduced in efforts (and assumptions) to use less water with sufficient returns in yields, ultimately maximizing water use efficiency.
