Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death in the Western world. An interesting feature is that, despite the many systemic risk factors, plaques do not form randomly in the vasculature, but at predilection sites associated with disturbed blood flow. Disturbed flow acts through the endothelium to promote a dysfunctional phenotype that is necessary for atherosclerosis initiation and progression. Importantly, the endothelium is also sensitive to laminar flow at normal velocities, such as occurs in relatively straight arteries.
