Join Dr. Catherine Eichhorn, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, to learn about the building block of life: DNA! Follow along at home as we extract DNA from pumpkins together using common household items. We’ll also learn about the unique shapes and structures of DNA and other molecules of life.

If you wish to follow along with the demonstrations during the program, you will need the following materials:
– Pumpkins – can also use fruits like strawberry or kiwi
– 70% isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
– 1 tablespoon salt
– Dish soap
– Coffee filter or paper towel
– Blender
– Clear cup (glass or plastic)
– Toothpick, kebab skewer, or wooden chopsticks
– Printout of DNA Origami document (available on Morrill Hall Sunday with a Scientist website)
