This presentation will provide an overview of the establishment of The Broward County Mental Health Court (1997). Judge Lerner-Wren will describe the precipitating problems in Broward County’s criminal justice system related to the trend known as the criminalization of persons with mental illness. This presentation will tell the story of the capacity of community stakeholders to problem-solve through collaboration and respond to vexing psycho-social problems to promote access to community-based mental health, recovery, and public safety.
