What is the role of legislation as land managers in Nebraska contend with the rapid expansion of invasive species? This presentation explores the past, present, and future of legislation in invasive species management, with special emphasis on Eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana), a native invasive species. First, we examine the historical approach, which was to manage species directly by state statute. Second, we look at modern Nebraska statutes that address invasive species and where they fit in today’s invasive species management paradigm. Finally, we assess opportunities for legislation to help address the rising threat invasive species pose to our cultural, ecological, and economic values in Nebraska.
