SUMMARY:Food for Health Seminar Series – Jonathan B. Clayton
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:Nebraska Food for Health Center member Dr. Jonathan B. Clayton\
, Department of Biology at UNO\, Food Science & Technology at UNL\, will p
resent\, “Modeling host-microbiome relationships in the primate gut”\,
via Zoom as part of the Food for Health Seminar Series. \n\nTalk Abstract
\: The primate gastrointestinal tract is home to trillions of bacteria tha
t play major roles in digestion and metabolism. Among other important aspe
cts of host health and behavior\, this anatomical site is also critical fo
r immune system development\, immune system function and pathogen resistan
ce. Furthermore\, diverse communities of microbes are also present in many
body sites other than the gut. To gain greater insights into the causal m
echanisms for microbiome-modulated metabolic diseases\, the Clayton Lab is
studying host-microbiome interactions in humans and nonhuman primates. We
are also exploring neurological/behavioral diseases such as depression to
better understand the impact of the microbiome on the gut-brain axis. We
do all of this using in vitro as well as in vivo experiments together with
powerful analysis approaches including next-generation sequencing\, anaer
obic and aerobic culture\, germ-free mice models\, and nonhuman primate mo
dels. The nonhuman primate model regularly used in the lab is the common m
armoset (Callithrix jacchus). During this presentation\, I will provide an
overview of the current projects in the lab\, including a study focused o
n understanding how antimicrobial treatment disrupts gut-brain communicati
 on.\n\nJoin Zoom meeting at\: https\://unl.zoom.us/j/92732064797?pwd=RVJQV
