SUMMARY:An Unexpected Change\, An Art Exhibition
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome artist Jamie Stephenson back to NIC!
Jamie's work is on display in the Link (2nd floor) through April 27. \n\n
Born in Macon\, Georgia\, Jamie became a third generation barber and has e
njoyed cutting men’s hair for nearly 20 years. Jamie's desire for a new
challenge led him to painting abstract art. Much like a haircut\, abstract
art allows Jamie to express himself with different textures\, depth and s
tyle. \n\nPainting is a means to express creativity Jamie didn’t realize
he had. He enjoys watching a painting develop and using intuition to brin
g it to completion. Jamie likes trying new techniques and experimenting wi
th different color schemes. \n\nJamie has participated in several group sh
ows in Lincoln and has artwork in Ampersand Guild in Georgia. He loves bei
ng able to make commissioned pieces for individuals by listening to their
ideas and keeping their vision as a focal point on their canvas.\n\nJamie
currently lives in Lincoln and recently retired from barbering full time.
He enjoys painting and being a stay-at-home dad to his two young daughters
\, Adilynn and Genevieve Joy. Jamie's wife\, Marilyn\, is currently in gra
duate school pursuing a career in nurse anesthesia. Jamie and his family e
njoy the Haymarket Farmer's Market\, the Lincoln Children's Zoo and the co
mmunity vibe that Lincoln offers. \n\nThis art exhibition is free and open
  to the public daily from 9\:00 a.m. - 8\:00 p.m.

SUMMARY:CBC/RBC seminar - Dr. Eranthie Weerapana\, Boston College
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:Cysteine residues are critical to the catalytic and regulatory
functions of diverse proteins including proteases\, oxidoreductases and ki
nases. Although the majority of catalytic cysteine residues are well annot
ated\, the identity and endogenous functions of regulatory and metal-bindi
ng cysteines are poorly understood. Regulatory cysteines are often located
distal to the catalytic or ligand-binding sites of proteins and regulate
protein function through posttranslational modifications\, such as oxidati
on. Metal-binding cysteines provide coordination to a variety of metal ion
s\, including zinc and iron\, and are essential to maintaining the structu
re and function of diverse metalloproteins. Oxidation and coordination to
metal ions result in distinct changes in cysteine reactivity\, and we have
developed a suite of chemoproteomic approaches for monitoring these cyste
ine-reactivity changes directly in cell lysates and living cells. Our effo
rts have generated a suite of chemical probes to investigate cysteine func
tion\, and unearthed previously uncharacterized functional cysteines impli
 cated in catalysis and regulation.

by Renee Tajima-Peña\, delivers a bold\, fresh perspective on a history
that matters today\, more than ever. As America becomes more diverse yet m
ore divided\, how do we move forward together? Told through intimate and p
ersonal lives\, the series casts a new lens on how one group of Americans\

n\nIn an era of exclusion and U.S. empire\, new immigrants arrive from Chi
na\, India\, Japan\, the Philippines and beyond. Barred by anti-Asian laws

posite sides of the battle lines.\n\nEpisode 3\: “Good Americans”\nWed
 nesday\, March 30\, 4pm CT\, Lied Commons\n\nDuring the Cold War years\, A
sian Americans are simultaneously heralded as a Model Minority and targete

n Americans aspire for the first time to national political office and a c
oming culture-quake simmers beneath the surface.\n\nEpisode 4\: “Generat
 ion Rising”\nThursday\, March 31\, 4pm CT\, Lied Commons\n\nDuring a tim
e of war and social tumult\, a young generation fights for equality in the

 “Breaking Through”\nFriday\, April 1\, 4pm CT\, Lied Commons\n\nAt the
turn of the new millennium\, the national conversation turns to immigrati

DESCRIPTION:Produced in collaboration with Martin Wong and Michael Louie of

e west coast and imprisoned in concentration camps during World War II. Ov
er 10\,000 were incarcerated at the Manzanar camp in the California desert
